Holly’s Men is a work of non-fiction in the memoir subgenre. It is best suited to the mature adult reading audience and was penned by author Holly Hail about her real-life experiences. First married at sixteen and a mother (albeit only briefly) at eighteen, Holly tells the tale of her misguided childhood and the men she met along the way, some of whom helped her but many of whom were opportunists who took advantage of an innocent soul. What results is a short and cathartic work of personal writing that has much to teach us about the harsh lessons of life, but also how we can overcome dark times in our own lives.
Whilst it is not the most professionally presented work of memoir writing I’ve read recently, there’s a valuable core and raw, emotional heart in the writings of author Holly Hail that’s undeniably touching. The narrative style is such that it feels like you are sitting in the room with the author as she tells her tale to you, and the emotional quality of the work comes through very clearly in every section of the work. I enjoyed the way the story flows in certain chapters and would love to see further episodes of Holly’s life, including the relationship with her parents and her children in more detail in future works. What results here is a snapshot of relationships, strong influences on young people, and the bitter truth that true romance and happiness take a lot of hard work, and a lot of mistakes, to achieve. Overall, I’d recommend Holly’s Men to readers seeking an honest and emotive memoir about relationships and the search for love.
