Hollow Bones is a novella-length work of horror fiction penned by author B. Narr. Written for adults due to its graphic depictions of violence and death, as well as the use of explicit language throughout, this impactful and tense work focuses on supernatural horror in natural settings. As bird experts Danielle and Luca work on saving the swampy wetlands from encroaching oil exploitation, Harper’s local boat tours are also about to be destroyed by the industrial shift. Amid these personal sufferings, people start to go missing, and before the swamp dries out, there will be plenty of bodies and sinister goings-on amid its dark trees and swallowing mud.
Author B. Narr has created one of the things I love best: a genre story that also contains diverse characters and unique voices, but doesn’t make a huge deal out of them. Alongside its excellent representation of LGBTQ+ voice, this is still first and foremost a horror novel, and it gives everything it’s got without relying on any gimmicks or exploitations. The female lead characters are well developed, realistic and capable, but also just as vulnerable to the fears and the powers lurking in the darkness as anyone else. The plot itself unveils in a very realistic and frightening way, and the pacing is perfect for the novella’s length to give lots of thrills at just the right moments. Overall, Hollow Bones is a highly successful and accomplished work of tense supernatural horror and comes highly recommended for anyone seeking a true fright.
