Holding On To Somewhere by W. Kay Shabazz is a very emotional book. It is the story of one woman’s courage and strength, along with her faith, to finally get herself and her children out of an abusive relationship. But all of this came with a cost. For eleven years Kim stood beside her husband, despite being beaten and bruised and accused of infidelity. Adept at hiding the bruises, she finally got up the nerve to leave and return to her grandparents, only to go back to her husband when he promised to change. After a move to Africa, two more tries at making her marriage work and almost losing her two boys, she finally had the courage to take her boys and end this relationship.
How can one describe this book? It is one that cannot be put down once you start reading and encounter the strength and the faith of a women who suffered at the hands of her husband. The personalities of each character seem to draw you right into the story, to each derogatory word that is spoken, to each slap of the hand, or each kick or blow of the fist. The end of the book sums it all up..."List and Listen: Make a list of what’s holding you back. Get Centered: There are always signs. Make your own change: Take charge of your life." And the best for last..."Hold onto your Faith: Your lowest moment is your best moment, your darkest time will make you shine." I would love to see a sequel to this book to see how she and her children have managed and if her husband finally leaves her alone. This is a recommended read.
