Hockey Wars 2: The New Girl by Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson is the second book in this thrilling action chapter book series. Written for children from ages 8 to 12, younger hockey fans, teenagers and even adults can relate to the rivalry and team spirit of hockey that shines through in the stories of the Dakota Hurricanes and the Dakota Lightning girls’ and boys’ teams. At this stage in the season, the teams have been selected and both girls and boys are looking forward to a competitive, but fun season. Life is good for them until the girls’ coach introduces them to a new player, Mia. What position does she play, and will she replace someone on the team? The girls feel threatened, especially their captain, Millie, who is also worried that her best friend Cameron might be interested in more than just Mia’s hockey-playing skills.
Sam Lawrence and Ben Jackson’s second story in the series addresses issues close to the heart of all children – Mia must learn to fit in and Millie must learn to let her. The character-driven storyline explores emotional issues all children must face while growing up. The mixed emotional edge – both pleasant and painful – associated with social standing and standing out is central to Mia and Millie’s story. Hockey Wars 2: The New Girl does more than just tell a story; it tackles the big issues of childhood with an action-packed and easy-to-understand writing style and builds in momentum, hurtling readers through thrilling events towards a satisfactory ending.
