Rio Koviak was born in Los Angeles, CA and earned a bachelor’s degree in Theater/Film at UCLA. While working in the talent and casting departments for such companies as ICM, ABC, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros., Rio continued to write fiction, short stories, and humor.
Meanwhile, Rio had developed a fascination with ethology and obtained a degree in Exotic Animal Training, Behavior, and Management at Moorpark College, CA.
After working in the animal industry for many years in the Bay area, Rio met her book-designing husband and the two relocated to Portland, OR. to raise their family. Rio began composing and narrating tales for her little ones using elements from her two former disciplines (creative arts and animal behavior/education), and the Hoagie & Katie series was born!

Hoagie and Katie in Space by Rio Koviak is a delightful tale of two friends. This book begins with Hoagie feeling at home with the capybara herd after being adopted by them. He tells the young ones exaggerated versions of the adventures he has had with Katie and makes them giggle. His favorite game with them is hide and seek and, since Hoagie is tiny, he can hide almost anywhere and the young ones cannot find him. Katie are Hoagie are good friends; they enjoy each other’s company and have mutual respect for each other. Hoagie falls asleep one night, but he wakes up suddenly by hearing something whiz past his head. The story takes a different turn and young readers get to see Hoagie and Katie being transported into space. The two friends have an adventurous trip and keep children fascinated and enthralled with their experiences in space.
The story, apart from being that of trust and friendship, is also about space, adventure, aliens, and fantasy. The awesome things Hoagie and Katie come across as they explore the planets and face dangerous situations will leave young readers curious and wanting more. The pictures are fabulous and captivating, and will give readers vibes of space. They also make the characters and scenes come alive with the glitter that is usually associated with the constellations and planets. The vivid and detailed descriptions in the narration make the story captivating, and will make young readers want to learn more about space and the secrets hidden there. It is an incredible journey and young readers will love experiencing it along with Katie and Hoagie.
