T.S. Maynard and W.J. McNally revolve their plot around the topic of past lives and quite attractively, too. It deals with the possibility of the science of past lives, starting with a current-day medical research project that opens up a can of worms as characters with past lives are alerted to this initiative. Essentially, the villains in the story have used their past lives, capitalizing on their memories and experiences of those past lives, to enrich themselves and gain power over the ages. And this they are willing to protect at any cost, even if it means annihilating the memories of others who have experienced past lives. Enter the anti-hero, his life derailed by memories and flashes that don't make sense to him, but he is willing to find out more and explore these memories with the help of a medical specialist and a villain turn-around. History of Lies gains momentum as the main villain and the anti-hero race to a culmination point where their presents collide into a surprising request for their futures.
History of Lies is written as a sequence of historical events, each event per character split into its chapter. Although the branches seem to jump around a bit, the reader won't be confused because each relates to a certain character's historical and current experience. T.S. Maynard and W.J. McNally put some effort into the historical element because the fiction woven around historical events makes one believe that one is reading another historical account. The reader learns how all the characters fit together, but the main characters - a villain and an anti-hero - are the focus of most of the chapters. Exciting descriptions of the events and scenes enable the reader to imagine a detailed picture and experience the book imaginatively. This was a great read for me!
