Hindsight by Owen Banner is a powerful opening in The O'Shea Trilogy, a novel with a strong appeal for fans of terrorist thrillers and novels featuring conspiracy and crime. Shirley O’Shea still suffers from the bad memories of his years in military service. He has PTSD, is broke, and has a lot of debts to pay off. When a stranger named Isaac shows up with a package full of money, O’Shea sees the job as a means of giving his family the life he’s failed to give them. But this job turns out to be a catalyst for a series of events that can destroy not only the life of his family, but an entire nation. O’Shea is a wanted man and a target. Follow this compelling character pitted against a powerful adversary and fighting to stop a terrible evil. Can he pay the price?
This is a very riveting story and I enjoyed the prose. It starts off a little slow, but the pace picks up with speed and intoxicating action. Terrific descriptions fill every page of the book. Here is how the narrative describes a female character in the story: “She's a forty-seven-year-old woman with hands as rough as a catcher's mitt and a face just about as leathery.” The protagonist is well developed and portrayed as a man ravaged by guilt. He is out to set things right, but the complexities of his trajectory find him embroiled in a greater danger and in something he never created. The characters are awesome, three-dimensional, and relatable. I loved the writing, which is punctuated by great dialogues. Hindsight is a fast-paced thriller spiced with humor, a perfect treat for fans of this genre.
