Hilda’s Wonky Wand by Cora Lydon is a fun and silly story about a fairy with a broken wand. A group of children goes for a walk in the forest to gather flowers when they hear a loud crash! Out comes a fairy named Hilda, with a wand that has been snapped in half. Hilda has tried to fix her wand by taping it back together. She offers to grant one wish to each of the four children, but every time she tries to use her wand, something strange and silly happens. Her wand can’t seem to understand her, and all the wishes go wrong. Finally, one little boy thinks of a solution to fix the fairy’s wand for good.
I read Hilda’s Wonky Wand to my three and six-year-old boys, and they loved it. They thought the messed up wishes were so funny, and they enjoyed the rhymes on each page. My kids and I loved the beautiful paper-cut illustrations. We thought they were so unique and colorful, and that it might be fun to try making pictures like that on our own. I used to work in early childhood education, and as the mom of two young boys, I can confidently say that Cora Lydon has created a memorable and magical story that is perfect for young children. It has adventure and humor and teaches kids to be creative when trying to solve a problem. I would recommend Hilda’s Wonky Wand to be read at home and in the classroom.
