Highland Harry: Monster Slayer is a work of fiction in the science fiction, adventure, action, and paranormal fiction subgenres. It is best suited to mature adult readers owing to scenes of graphic violence, scenes of a sexual nature, and the use of explicit language throughout. Penned by author R.C. Davis, the work sees us propelled into a near-future world where a deadly global pandemic has overwhelmed the planet. Young protagonist Harry and his father, Harold Sr., have lost their mother and wife, respectively, and so the older man embarks the pair of them on a monster-slaying quest to reunite with a long-lost Marine Corps buddy. What awaits them on this lethal journey? Only time will tell.
Author R.C. Davis has crafted a thrilling and compelling work of apocalyptic-style fiction that combines plenty of science fiction, fantasy, and paranormal elements to fuse a chilling sense of adventure into the very bones of the story. One of the features that really impressed me was the underlying theme of family drama hiding beneath all the bells and whistles of this action-adventure plot, which is heartfelt and emotionally-minded as it tells the tale of the younger Harry’s journey to find his true self whilst also grieving for his mother and juggling his tenacious father’s will. The dialogue sets this dynamic off well between the two, and the characters and monsters they meet along the way really test the pair’s mettle with some spectacularly penned action scenes as a result. Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend Highland Harry: Monster Slayer as an all-out action and adventure tale for fans of creative and original science fiction that also has plenty of heart.
