Hidden Truths by L.M. Hatchell follows Emma, an empath, who works as an administrator at The Archives, which forms part of the lowest level of the Department for Protection and Integration of the Gifted (DPIG). After doing a search on Patrick Ryan and coming up blank, Emma’s life is turned upside down. When her best friend is attacked and the dots start to connect, Emma realizes that her life could be in danger. Following cryptic messages and with more kids going missing, Emma realizes that this situation is bigger than a few missing records.
L.M. Hatchell’s Hidden Truths had me turning the pages quicker than I could read, and wanting more. The story is set in the present and hinges on the idea of illegal government experiments which have resulted in the Gifted Gene being passed down. Emma is an empath and fully aware of her capabilities. However, when cornered she discovers a capability she never knew before. The events that take place were neatly woven together. It just needed one person to cut the figurative thread to unravel the truth. One theme that I saw echoed throughout the novella was trust. This is especially true when taking that leap of faith and hoping that you made the right decision. I would like to see more of Emma’s neighbor Mrs. Robinson and discover any other surprises there might be in store for us. Perhaps even a romance between Emma and Agent McNamara. Can’t wait to sink my teeth into the rest of the series!
