What is a merrow? It's one of the long-thought extinct species, creatures that can breathe underwater. And, for that matter, what is a shadowveil? We have read about gnomes and winged horses, and magical boxes that sing, but what about all the other elements of magic that exist in the world? Mira is fascinated with the stories she hears about the winged horse, though she admits to being a little frightened at the idea of being kidnapped. As she eavesdrops at her mother’s window and learns about the winged horse, she is about to embark on an adventure. One that might explain the magical box she finds in an antique store that only sings for her and the strange scales that suddenly start appearing on her feet.
A.M. Robin’s young people’s fantasy novel, Hidden Scales, is an adventure for fantasy readers of all ages. Mira's adventure is one that will challenge her perception of what is real and imagined, what is good and evil, and who to trust and who not to trust. She can always trust her best friend, Peter, even though he’s not different like she is. There is danger lurking everywhere and, as Mira comes to the realization that she is, in fact, very different, she must fight to protect not only herself but also those she has come to hold dear. With a mixture of fantasy, fairy tale, magic, mythical creatures, and a whole lot of adventure, the story moves at a compelling pace, with multiple twists and turns as the plot thickens. The characters are well developed and very believable and the descriptive passages weave the reader right into the story. A great read!
