Hidden Heroes of our Community chronicles the experiences of George Horner, a newly qualified nurse getting a first-hand look into the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus between 2019 and 2020. After completing a BA Hons degree in Sports Development at the University of Chichester, UK, George enters the profession of nursing, joining the local community hospital as a healthcare assistant. The author shares personal anecdotes about caring for patients suffering from pain or pressure ulcers, looking after their mental well-being, and using humor to ease patients' suffering. He also provides real-life examples of end-of-life care and shows how to deal with abusive patients. Midway through the book, the narrative becomes more of a diary that showcases the increasingly devastating impact of the COVID-19 virus on the general public and NHS workers alike.
George Horner's timely memoir brilliantly showcases the sacrifices and risks that frontline workers take every single day of their lives to help people in need. The year 2020 was declared the Year of the Nurse by the World Health Organization, and the pandemic has not only proven the statement to be true but also shed light on their vital role in our day-to-day lives. Hidden Heroes of our Community consists of anecdotes from Horner and his fellow colleagues' experiences while dealing with a myriad of different people with varied illnesses. Their job only gets more stressful with the dawn of the global pandemic, as it puts them on the frontline with their own lives at risk. I'm glad I read this book and I highly recommend it.
