Here Today Gone Tomorrow by Carlene Havel is a story about loss, love, and Christian hope. Casey Slaughter is recently divorced. Bitter and lonely, Casey truly believes she will never find the man of her dreams. She is working hard to pay the bills, save for a new car, and make ends meet. By day she works as a hospital account administrator, while at home each night, she sews and sells wedding and bridesmaid dresses. Her mother, sister, and friends all try to set up her for dates and tell her that after two years it is time to get back in the dating game. Casey refuses and, while she admits to her loneliness, meeting men is not something she wants to do. When Carlos moves in next door, the neighbors are concerned he might be strange because of the African masks they see being moved in. Casey, seeing him in a pirate outfit and wearing make-up, is sure he is gay. The two become quick friends, however, when Casey saves his house and befriends his puppy, Parker. A hurricane heading right for their Houston neighborhood changes everything when they are forced to flee.

Carlene Havel has written about a typical thirty-something woman in pain from divorce and turned it into a beautiful story. Casey and Carlos were very real, very sincere, and extremely likable. Here Today Gone Tomorrow is a story about relationships, trust, and what God can accomplish. I found it impossible not to care about Casey and kept reading in the hopes that she would find happiness. Here Today Gone Tomorrow will make you cry and make you laugh, and is a must-read for all romance fans. I quickly have become a fan of Carlene Havel and can’t wait to read her other books.
