Her Own Revolution by Debra Borchert is an immersive historical story set in the 1790s during The French Revolution. Though the new French government’s motto includes freedom for all, Geneviève Fouquier-Tinville believes the only thing women are free to do is to starve. She wishes to leave France and be reunited with her lover, Henri, in America. Geneviève attends university disguised as a man and later works as a clerk for her father, the Public Prosecutor, who has been sentencing thousands to be guillotined. She hopes to save many awaiting prosecution from death through a risky plan. If discovered, she could be one of those facing Madame Guillotine. Among those whom she rescues is Louis LaGarde, the arrogant noble who had discovered her disguise at university.
Filled with absorbing turns, this is a captivating story led by a courageous and likable heroine. I enjoyed the setting and found the historical detail fascinating and informative. Other characters are also well-rendered and their personalities and emotions are explored which makes them appear realistic. Geneviève and LaGarde’s dialogue also feels authentic. The tension in the story is sustained right to the end and the action scenes were unpredictable and thrilling. The story’s romantic thread is beautifully crafted and I enjoyed the humor included in the conversations between Geneviève and LaGarde. Her Own Revolution by Debra Borchert is an engaging read told by a brave and determined heroine. Fans of historical novels will love the historical information included and the story’s compelling characters. Highly recommended.
