Helen by Simon Spence is a playful version of Greek mythology that will appeal to children. Zeus, the king of the gods, fell in love with Princess Nemesis. Through magic, he turned both of them into wild geese that laid an egg along the lake at the palace. Queen Leda saw the egg during her routine walk and took it home, where it hatched into the breathtaking Helen. She became the most beautiful maiden in Sparta, bringing heroes and princes to ask for her hand in marriage. Menelaus won her hand, and they began married life, but she was unhappy because of his travels. Prince Paris showed up from Troy, fell in love with her, and took her home. Will Menelaus let her be with the man she loves?
Helen by Simon Spence is a beautiful children’s storybook that I enjoyed reading. I also loved the varied explanations of events at the end of the book. Greek history can be quite complicated, but Simon has written a part of it most simply. Kids will understand the story easily. I loved the colors, drawings, and fonts that were applied, as they’re easy on the eyes, taking kids into consideration. The book is also educational because it covers traits like deception, faithfulness, manipulation, and courage. I also applaud Simon for writing an error-free book, grammatically and typographically. One way children build their vocabulary is through reading, so here’s a splendid book. I enjoyed this book and would love to read another one from him!
