As a reader who simply loves mysteries, almost nothing makes me more excited than finding a promising new series in the genre. Add in a strong female protagonist, and, well you’ve just done me one better. So I was extremely excited to find Heart Break by debut author MF Moskwik, and the first in the Isabel Swift series. And I wasn’t disappointed! The story follows a young Isabel Swift, police officer with the Westchester County police department with dreams of becoming a detective. When her friend and mentor, deputy sheriff Ben Carter, dies from an apparent heart attack, Isabel is left shaken and grieving. When she finds, with her partner, forensic data scientist Mark Jameson, that his death might not have been as natural as it seemed, and in fact is linked to a theft of stolen technology, that’s when the story really turns into a rip-roaring ride of a read.
This book had me hooked from the beginning. MF Moskwik has an engaging, exciting writing style that will keep you turning the pages to find out what happens next. She developed the characters of Swift and Jameson beautifully, but even her minor characters were given such a life that they seemed to leap off the pages. Any reader who loves mysteries, action-packed suspense novels, or just a great, fun read would enjoy this book. The only piece of advice that I have for someone picking up Heart Break is to make sure that you have enough time to read it all in one sitting, because you won’t want to put it down! I'm thrilled that this is the first book in a series and will be eagerly waiting the next installment of the very promising Isabel Swift series.
