Hazel the Tired Mountain Goat, written by Aaron Taylor and illustrated by Surya Gunawan, is a sweet and encouraging tale of a young girl and her father. Hazel and her father decide to go on an adventure and hike to a waterfall aptly named Hidden Falls. He forewarns his young daughter that she needs to prepare herself because even though the journey will be worth the effort, it will also be challenging. Setting a great example as a father, he explains to her that he only expects her to try her best. During the mountain hike, young Hazel grows tired as any parent would expect. Through her father’s creative way of getting her to finish her hike, and through the beautifully illustrated pages, readers will be excited to share it with their young child to see what happens next.
This is a wonderful short story for parents to share with their young children. It is also simple enough for young readers to enjoy on their own. The different suggestions that Hazel’s father makes are uniquely creative ways to continue her hike and can be shared by parents or teachers with children. It would allow them to interact with the story and use the different ideas that Hazel comes up with. By incorporating these, readers can enjoy this book over and over again. In Hazel the Tired Mountain Goat, Aaron Taylor has created more than just a fun book. He’s written a story that will open young readers’ little minds and imaginations.
