Now, I have to admit that realistic historical fiction books are not in my top few genres. If I read a historical fiction, I prefer it to be a naughty Victorian or Regency romance. However, Hawk Quest by Robert Lyndon may have just turned me down the path of no return. I loved that the cast of characters were so different, and that we got a chance to visit so many different lands while we were inside their heads. I really felt like I was transported back into the Middle Ages of Europe.
Set in England and Europe in the late eleventh century, a brave knight named Vallon must face battles, Vikings, etc to capture four extremely rare hawks in order to save their captured brother at arms. Journeying across lands far and wide and encountering enormous obstacles, there can be no telling who will be left standing when the dust and chaos of the battlefield has fallen silent.
This book was a constant, blow-by-blow action fest. Ladies, get this one for your man if he's the slightly nerdy type and can sit still for a while. This book's got everything that those men of ours wish they could find in our easy, technically savvy world: bloodshed, violence, and a great quest. While the book does smack of the traditional "epic journey" kind of plot, there is a reason that trope is so popular. People like it and it's exciting to read! Vallon and his crew brave so many obstacles, it's actually hard to catch your breath in between scenes. Definitely look into Hawk Quest if you are the adventurous sort.
