Hate Hunters is a work of fiction in the literary, interpersonal drama, and social, political, and cultural writing subgenres. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience and was penned by author Mari Georgeson. Taking a satirical and gently critical look at today’s culture, the novel follows a series of characters working on improving America for the future, most noticeably the quietly unfulfilled Alma, who works in the Tolerance Department. As her patience wears thin, we explore a world where people are tasked with looking back over the sins of the past whilst trying not to commit any more in the present, losing themselves in a spiral of shame that might just be masking the path to a brighter future.
Author Mari Georgeson has crafted a really interesting novel that explores culture, politics, and society from several different perspectives, all under the common umbrella of the future of America and its people. In a nation with such a complex history and dynamics, the array of characters is brought to life with suitably diverse dialogue and lots of narrative charm, allowing them to each become fully realized human beings whom you feel could pop up on the news at any moment. I especially enjoyed the exploration of what the American dream means to so many, especially in today’s context as we look back over how different cultures and their clashes have been perceived then and now. Overall, Hate Hunters presents a fascinating literary perspective as well as an engaging read and character study, and I’d recommend it to anyone with an interest in American culture.
