In Harold Archermouse and the White Hare by Sally-Ann Warner, Harold Archermouse is a very caring mouse. He has lots of friends, including the hares that live on top of the hill overlooking Whispering Wood, the very hares that watch carefully over the moon at night to keep it safe. These hares are moonkeepers. Harold is even friends with the great White Hare, the one who keeps the moon safe and makes sure that it rises every night. The moon is very important to keep everyone safe during the dark night in Whispering Wood.
When the great White Hare goes missing, Harold takes it upon himself to not only search for the missing White Hare, but also to make sure that there is a moon in the sky each night. He tries all kinds of creative ideas to place a moon in the sky. Salmon gives him a love round pearl, but when the pearl is hung high in the tree, it looks too small to be a moon. Harold and his friends steal a big round cheese from the farmer, but when they hang it in the tree, the crows eat it very quickly. He has his friend Arthur create a large circle out of metal, which they hang in the tree. It’s nice and shiny in the sunlight, but at night, it no longer shines. Harold is sad. He has run out of ideas. Just when he was about to give up, he sees his answer...
Sally-Ann Warner has written another super Harold Archermouse tale, with colorful illustrations and some rhyming verse to carry the story along. Like all of the Harold Archermouse tales, this one has a lesson that is important for young readers. Harold never gives up. He sets upon a course of action and sees his project through to its completion. Even Harold learns that “Good things happen when you don’t give up.” A very powerful message. This is a delightful children's tale with a valuable lesson about believing in oneself and never giving up.
