Hard Vacuum 1 by Simon Cantan depicts the life of Kyra Sarin, freshly returned to civilization from a five-year battle against man's worst enemy. All she wants to do is go home to her little girls, but she finds a team of mercs standing between her and home.
Hard Vacuum 1 is a hard-hitting science fiction adventure that is light on the jargon and heavy on the action. Kyra Sarin hits the ground running on page one and doesn't stop until the end. From death defying escapes to jaw-dropping action scenes, Simon Cantan takes the reader on a one-way ride to excitement. I flew through the pages without even realizing how far I'd read until I realized there was no more.
While Hard Vacuum is a short read, I didn't feel short changed. The story felt complete as is, or as it was intended as the set up for the sequel. The one liners, while sometimes a bit corny and hardly original, added nice asides to the action, and they felt familiar and right for the characters.
I look forward to reading more by Simon Cantan. His writing is fun and detailed enough to get lost in. His depiction of a tough female war veteran is admirable, and his take on men and women as soldiers is out of the norm. His villains and plot twists were unexpected and, while a bit over the top, they were true to the Eighties-style science fiction Cantan hoped to emulate. While the language is a little coarse for adolescents, adult science fiction lovers of both sexes will find Hard Vacuum 1 an exciting read.
