Hannibal's Niece: A Tale of Love, Murder, and Deceit in Ancient Rome by Anthony R. Licata follows one warrior’s quest to avenge the death of his father, but little does he know that this would lead him to find that one thing he never expected to find: love. The story follows the revenge driven Scipio, a Roman general who is waiting for his chance to avenge his father’s death. In order to do that, he is ready to take chances and take risks that pay off. He has one goal in mind: take his revenge against Hannibal. When he takes the war to Hasdrubal (Hannibal’s brother), he has no idea that he will find the one thing he never knew he needed.
Scipio seized Hasdrubal’s harem and takes the finest and the prettiest woman to be his personal slave. Vibiana, however, is no ordinary girl. She is the niece of Hannibal and a mere innocent in this war between these two men. Taken with her personality, her kindness and her beauty, Scipio finally has something else to fight for. But his primary reason to fight is still the same; however, that does not deter the people from his own senate who believe that he cannot do it anymore. What will Scipio do now? Can he avenge his father and keep the woman he loves?
Usually historical novels don’t have much appeal for me, especially the ones that are about war. But Hannibal’s Niece was different. Scipio had so many layers and I loved peeling them back. He was a ferocious man, who was hell-bent on avenging his father, but with the introduction of Vibiana, he changed and he embraced love. This novel was faced paced, intense and action packed, and that made me want more. I liked the action and I loved the novel. The dialogues, the imagery and the sheer perfection of the development had me hooked. Interesting, well written and brilliant.
