Hanging Cloud by Steve Zimcosky tells the intriguing story of Private Investigator Tom Sipowicz of Polish Dragon Investigations and his partner Suzie Mandrake. On the advice of Detective Ed Murphy, Cleveland Police, Ron McLemore hires Tom to investigate the disappearance of Ron’s father, Thomas McLemore. Tom’s investigation leads him to the Cleveland Native American Center where Director Stanley Crow Feather tells Tom about the Voluntary Relocation program of Native Americans. Tom discovers that many years back Obstetrician Doctor Gregory Zimmer and nurse Martha Gibson had taken part in unethical activities. Jeromy Stoops, a former member of the Cleveland Police Department, wants Tom off the case which involves the government and possibly the Catholic Church. Tom enlists Timothy Fredrick Bucheran, investigative reporter for the Plain Dealer, and Kyle Jalowiec at the FBI office. He discovers that Rita Hanging Cloud from the Fond Du Lac Indian Reservation west of Duluth Minnesota was also a victim of the doctor’s unethical behavior. Tom finds himself in danger. He must use his knowledge and skills to protect himself and the victims.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hanging Cloud. Steve Zimcosky is a great author; his writing is smooth flowing and comfortable to read. The many characters are realistic and easy to relate to, including the Native Americans and the people of Cleveland. I especially enjoy the way Tom interacts with his clients and investigative team, treating everyone with dignity and respect. The venues and locations are well described, including the Native American Center which sounds like a place one would love to visit. All round, a fantastic novel filled with twists, turns, and many surprises. Highly recommended to readers of all ages and a book would make a great gift for the holiday season.
