Hamilton Troll Meets Elwood Woodpecker by Kathleen J. Shields is a delightful storybook for children and is the fourth in the Hamilton Troll series. In this story, Hamilton meets Elwood Woodpecker who is trying to peck at a particular tree and gets a headache because the dead tree is very hard. Hamilton approaches the fallen tree and he hurts his knuckles. They decide to ask the Beaver Brothers about the tree. They walk towards the Beavers' fancy stick dam and tell Baxter and Boswell about the tree. Boswell tells them that the tree is petrified wood and describes to them the meaning of petrified wood. The story tells readers about petrified wood, how woodpeckers drill holes in trees, and some interesting facts about beavers.

The book, like the author’s other books, is educational and informative and the meanings of the difficult words at the bottom of the pages help kids learn new words and improve their vocabulary. The illustrations are bright and colorful and breathe life into the characters and scenes, making them come alive to young readers. It's a good story that can be used for interactive sessions in classrooms and school libraries, and parents and grandparents can use it as a bedtime storybook to read out to their kids and grandkids. The characters of Hamilton Troll, Elwood Woodpecker, Baxter, and Boswell are adorable and memorable and kids will love them. Books like this with a good story and informative and educational content are perfect for children to help them grow in many ways.
