Mission #1: The Nobbled Numbskull is the first book in the children’s book series GummShoes written by E.J. Gore. Frankie Gumm was not a fan of sports, but due to a talent-swap with Mack – Captain of the Cannons (Carson Road School’s soccer team) – Frankie was forced to play as school bully/star soccer player, Jon Nittleson (aka Nits), had been injured for the third week in a row. With suspicions raised that somebody was intentionally harming Nits, Frankie and his fellow sleuths, Olly and Binka, decide to investigate, since nobody can have such a run of bad luck unless somebody else had helped it along. After gathering as much evidence as possible, they come to the conclusion that somebody is trying to cost the Cannons the championship game by taking out their star player. Narrowing it down to two prime suspects, the Gummshoes are in a race against time to not only find out who is responsible, but also stop the next attack before it’s too late.
I had only planned to read a few pages of this book each night to help me fall asleep, but the characters and the story were so engaging that the fun within the pages won out over sleep. E.J. Gore paced the book well, enabling the reader to absorb each new bit of information while trying to determine who the culprit was. It was hard to feel sorry for Nits, being that he was such a bully to those who were trying to help him, but with Frankie also not wanting to play in any more soccer games, I could understand the motivation for the junior sleuths to continue. I liked how Olly and Frankie took Binka under their wing and stood up for him when he was subjected to bullying. Mission 1: The Nobbled Numbskull not only provided great entertainment in the solving of a great mystery, but also showed the nasty effects of bullying in schools, and how standing together against the bullies can make a big impact in building the confidence of bullying victims. I feel that this book should be stocked in school libraries and recommend this book to children in the 7-12 age group.
