Guilt in Hiding by Donald Levin is the third book in the Martin Preuss Mystery series. Martin Preuss doesn’t have an easy life; his son is handicapped, his wife long dead and his boss doesn’t like him. He is put in charge of the case of a transport van for the handicapped that has gone missing. The driver has disappeared too, along with the passenger, a handicapped man in a wheelchair. Suddenly the man turns up, unharmed, and Preuss must now find the van and driver. Tripped up at every turn by his colleagues and bosses, personally involved because of his son, Preuss gradually uncovers the truth as he peels away the layers of secrecy, a truth rooted in the darkest of times.
Guilt in Hiding by Donald Levin is a real edge of the seat page-turner. I didn’t read the previous books and, although this story contained enough backstory, it’s probably best to read the series in order to truly understand the main character. However, I found this an easy book to read, written in straightforward language. A great deal of research must have been done because the story is peppered with factual information, making the story even more realistic. The characters are exceptionally well-written, right down to conflicts in personality, making them truly identifiable.
The plot is one of many layers, building up gradually throughout the book with lots of twisting and turning along the way. There are inevitable dead ends and complex subplots that have all been expertly woven into one satisfying story that leads to an ending you may not have contemplated. This is a great book for fans of mysteries and police dramas; you won't be disappointed.
