I loved this world of clovers in Grover the Clover by Tim Callahan. It’s unique to have these plant people in their own modern-day world as opposed to being in a garden of some sort. I also enjoyed traveling with Grover to meet his different family members and calling my attention to these beautiful clovers the world over. In addition, I think children are going to love Grover. Some children will love him because they have felt or feel about themselves, for one reason or another, as he does about himself. Some children will love him because they will want to wrap their arms around him and let him know that he is wonderful just the way he is. And, of course, the person who helps Grover to change his course of thinking is such a delight.
I would say that the strongest point in Tim Callahan’s Grover the Clover is how the author lets this character evolve into the changed person that Grover becomes. Children will experience Grover’s feelings and his thought processes in ways that they readily connect with and that will help them effect a change in their own self-perspective if they, too, are self-conscious about any differences. This is such a critical part of the story as any real change in a child’s self-perspective needs to come about in just this way. Thank you, Tim Callahan, for such a beautiful story for children who are concerned about being different. I encourage parents to share this uplifting story with their children.
