Great Lakes: The Saga of the Inland Seas by Lilly Kirckof and Daniel Butler tells a story that spreads as wide and deep as the mighty great lakes themselves. Sail into a story of drama and intrigue, starting from the earliest days of wind wagons on the lakes to the big steel ships that currently roam the waves. A story rich with the historical value that historians love, but a great story being told. This book is one of those that finds its happy place between fact and fiction as it takes you on a journey over the waters.
As a born and bred Minnesota girl who spent a lot of time on Lake Superior, I was drawn to this book because of its look at the Great Lakes. Once I started reading, I decided to stay for the entertainment and the fantastic history being played out before me. This book does what many historical fictions try to do, but do not quite live up to, in giving you rich historical fact, but also keeping you entertained with a full and ripe story being told. Drama and romance walk hand in hand with pure history and that is what made me truly enjoy reading every page of this book. Lilly Kirckof and Daniel Butler have done an amazing job in making a truly enjoyable and educational book that shines a light on a part of America many overlook. This is a book I will read again for the enjoyment of it, and I highly recommend it for others to read as well.
