Grave Misdeeds by Raymond P. Cowie is a humorous tale of death and dastardly deeds in the 1880s. Set in Victorian London where it is a daily struggle just to stay alive in a time when Jack the Ripper was on the rampage, Ebenezer Crockett and his sidekick Archie Dobbs live from day to day, breaking the law to earn enough money to live. Archie is not long married and talks about his good wife constantly, about how she wants him to leave his life of crime and get a real job. Crockett doesn’t agree and as they get into an argument in a stinking pub, they are approached by one who clearly does not fit in. A real gentleman offers them a proposition, and sweetens the deal with a purse full of money and the offer of more than they can make in a lifetime. And it all goes well until Archie finds his wife dead. He knows who did it, but what will happen when he confronts the perpetrator?
Grave Misdeeds by Raymond P. Cowie was quite a funny story. I must say I loved the language used in writing it; it added to the whole air that I suspect Mr Cowie was trying to create. I must say it was a good tale, well written and with a twist or two in it that you might or might not suspect. That will depend on how well you read the story. Good book, amusing tale, it kept me occupied for an evening.
