Grasp, by David Yuen, is a deep and compelling faith-based work exploring social issues and current events from a Christian point of view. An effective blend of memoir, poems, essays, and prose, this author delves into his own psyche and the human psyche to present what it means to be human in today's world. He addresses subjects like the Coronavirus, divisive politics, and everyday human challenges. He not only asks questions about humanity but offers answers and possibilities. We all have hardship, confusion, and doubt, but Yuen offers a positive answer in the midst of shadows.
If you like writing that is deep and moving, you will find it in this book. Yuen has a splendid way of condensing big, complex ideas into poetic language that draws out your emotions and has you thinking about them and life in different ways. I love the contrasting but balanced ideas he has of light and dark, life and death, faith and doubt. Even through all of his poignant, sometimes difficult expositions, you will sense a lyrical calmness, a steadfastness that is rooted in his faith. He covers the little moments of life as well as the big; the simple as well as the profound. If life is like a kaleidoscope, this volume of writing shows you all the shapes and colors of it. His talent is expressed in lovely, thought-provoking poetry as well as emotional, personal prose. He explores relationships, ethics, the meaning of life, and so much more. His vulnerable style is what is most appealing to me, and his courage in discussing tough subjects such as upheaval, suicide, war, etc.
What stands out the most are his experiences as a Chinese-American Christian, and the uncomplicated way he shares his faith and beliefs. My favorite story is how he reached out to a suffering employee he had just terminated and ministered to him in personal ways, which led to the young man accepting Christ as his Savior. The accompanying images add another layer to the text. For writing that is meaningful and relevant to the current state of affairs in the world, and perhaps even in your own life, take time to read Grasp by David Yuen.
