Grandparents’ Day, written by Tina Marie Kaht and illustrated by Valeria Avantario, is a delightful story about a day in the life of a young girl with her grandparents. Her grandmother cooks a lovely breakfast and she helps with laying the table, and then goes to see her grandfather. He has not been well and so she helps him with his socks and shoes, and recalls how he used to help her the same way. She helps him in lots of ways and again this brings back memories of when she was little and her grandfather would have to help her. She helps with the garden, lets her grandfather hold on to her for support to collect the mail, and then plays puzzles with her grandmother, which is something she has enjoyed since she was very young.
This is such a sweet and gentle story that shows the way the young grandchild has really role-swapped with her grandparents and does everything she can to help them. She recalls how they would help her when she was much younger, and is pleased that she is now able to do that for them. There is understanding with the grandfather’s illness, realising his limited abilities due to his condition, and a keenness to help and share the burden. This story is about understanding and compassion, and enduring love for family. The author, Tina Marie Kaht, has written a lovely emotive story which is perfectly enhanced by the simple yet detailed illustrations that complement the storyline. A lovely book that a parent could read to a child, especially in homes where there are sick relatives.
