Visiting Grandma’s house for a sleepover is always a delight until it is time to go to bed. In Grandma’s House is Haunted by Stephen G. Bowling, Grandma spends the afternoon letting her grandchildren know how special they are by baking, playing games, and having fun. When it is time for lights out, the children are sure ghosts and goblins surround them both inside and outside the house. The creatures are so loud the children can hear their singing and games. When the children share their fears with Grandma, they learn that no ghosts or goblins are near. A tour of the old house introduces the children to the noises of a settling home and the objects that cause shadows in the night. After several explanations, Grandma escorts the children to bed for a much-needed night’s sleep.
I enjoyed Grandma’s House is Haunted by Stephen G. Bowling and the introduction it gives children to the odd sights and sounds of an old home. The stunning illustrations add to the story, showing the beautiful old Victorian home where Grandma lives. The ghosts, goblins, and witches are enchantingly spooky yet playful and non-frightening for little imaginations. The explanations given for the creepy sights and sounds are easy to understand. This book is a perfect conversation starter for parents when discussing nighttime fears with their children. It will reassure a frightened child that they are not alone in attributing nighttime sights and sounds to a scary creature when they are, in fact, a simple part of life.
