I just couldn't resist reading a book with the title Good Writing is Like Good Sex. After all, it involves two of my most favorite things to do. C.S. Johnson did not disappoint. She delivered a book that I enjoyed reading and I think will improve my writing. I have read or attempted to read a lot of books on writing over the years but most of them were not exciting or, as Johnson might say, sexy. So, I either didn't finish them or failed to put their advice into action. I don’t think that will happen this time. I actually finished Good Writing is Like Good Sex. In fact, I found it hard to put down. After all, who doesn't want to improve their sex life or their writing? I like C.S. Johnson’s style. I like the way she took a potentially boring subject and added enough sass and style to the very essential lessons she taught to keep it interesting and make it relevant to me as a writer struggling to improve my craft.
What impressed me the most as I read Good Writing is Like Good Sex was first the writing style. I was immediately assured that C.S. Johnson knows what she is talking about. That is important to me. I didn't want to read a book written by someone in a “those who can’t do, teach” situation. But from the very first page, I knew that C.S. Johnson can write, and she writes well. The next thing that impressed me was the layout of the book. C.S. Johnson is organized and presents her ideas in a well-organized chapter by chapter manner that made sense to me, as both a writer and a reader. If you are thinking about taking up writing as a way of life or just a hobby, I recommend you read Good Writing is Like Good Sex first.
