Goo On My Shoe by Jacqui Shepherd is a rollicking, rhyming romp. A young child puts on brand-new shoes but there is something wrong. A sticky substance is on the bottom of one shoe, posing the dilemma of what to do. The child spends some time trying to guess what kind of substance this could be. Is it glue? No! Is it colorful? No! They then try to remove it using various methods without much success. Finally, they are left with no choice but to call in their favorite local superhero. Who is this superhero? Will they be able to remove the goo from the shoe and will the new shoes be saved?

Goo On My Shoe is an amusing, silly story. Most kids will be quite familiar with having something sticky on their shoes. I enjoyed the detective aspect of this tale as the child uses logic to try to identify the sticky material. Equally impressive is that the children initially try to solve the problem by themselves, and only when they have run out of ideas do they call for help. The illustrations by SKlakina are clear and simple. The child is pictured with bright yellow hair, an oversized blue sweater, and blue sneakers with the mysterious goo. Kids will have an enjoyable time trying to figure out what could be on those shoes. Jacqui Shepherd's rhymes are fun to read aloud and reinforce the early literacy skill of phonological awareness. This is an entertaining read sure to please young listeners.
