Gods and Psychopaths is a work of horror fiction and the opening to a brand new series by author Louis Park. Recommended for mature readers due to its high content of gore, sex, violence, language, and themes of blasphemy and anti-religious views, this intense and exciting work starts with a bang and never lets up. Coming in from the angle that the omnipotent gods of our world are bored deities with immense amounts of power, we meet Little Dog in the form of a tiny black Scottish terrier. Little Dog needs amusement, and so he chooses drifter Cain to do his bidding. Cain only wants a quiet life, but now he must let the blood flow for Little Dog, or risk his own life by saying no.
Author Louis Park has created the first installment in a really promising new horror series, one which contains the kind of sadistic freedom elements of works like The Purge and the more recent Joker incarnation. Though the central character Cain is clearly psychotic and unbalanced, there’s clever reasoning in the narration and ideas which tap into our own basic human instincts of wanting to punish others for their wrongdoing and the injustices we see every day. All of this plays well into a psychological plotline that is well-grounded and peppered with exciting twists, not least of which an ending that will leave you hungry for the novel’s next installment. Overall, Gods and Psychopaths is a gloriously indulgent horror fantasy with lots of humor, intellect and good unclean fun.
