Godeena is a work of science fiction, action and futuristic war fiction penned by author Stjepan Varesevac Cobets. The central character is the tough and imposing Major Henry Broncon, who leads us through the violent and mysterious landscape of this sci-fi thriller novel as he becomes the sole survivor of a terrible attack. Wracked by guilt and slowly unraveling, Henry embarks on a mission to the planet Godeena which he knows is likely to end his life. Taking a team of prisoners with him, each with their own powerful and unique skill set, Henry finds a lot more than he bargained for when he arrives at the mysterious uninhabited city of the Absolute.
Author Stjepan Varesevac Cobets packs a lot of information, lore, politics and social systems into this novel, which makes it very rich and realistic but occasionally a little tough to keep up with. That said, hardcore fans of crunchy details and strong worldbuilding will appreciate Henry’s journey and the experiences of the other characters we meet and experience missions with; from the prisoners themselves to other forces' members. I liked the central mystery very much, as well as the cast of uniquely skilled prisoners and how their traits became useful at different points in the tale. The prose is well crafted and the dialogue was particularly effective for developing the many varied characters of the story, distinguishing them each as individuals. Overall, Godeena is an exciting and thrilling mystery tale that hardcore science fiction and military fiction fans will certainly enjoy.
