Katherine is disappointed when Phillip, her husband, is called into work on his first day off in two years. The lonely housewife had been so looking forward to this time off that she did not notice the chaos unfolding around her. Her reverie was broken when she returned home from an early shopping trip to find Phillip heading out the door, saying he’d been called back to work. She soon learns that the king is dead and, as the day unfolds, it’s further discovered that Phillip is believed to be guilty of embezzling royal funds. A run-in with a cousin, who at first promises hope, leads to the suspicion of a frame-up to get her husband out of the picture and out of her life. As Katherine’s world turns upside down, she realizes that two years of loneliness have been for nothing as she has become disconnected from the world around her. God Save The King by Memphis Mendicant is a short but powerful cautionary tale about living with blinders on.
I enjoyed God Save The King because it’s a short story, but it isn’t simple. Readers delve into a fantasy that reflects the world we live in and see it through a combination of Katherine’s limited vision and our own broader perspective. The story develops at a brisk pace, and readers must be mindful of the unfolding events to figure out if this is a set-up or a wider royal conspiracy. Memphis Mendicant creates a great, enthralling tale that hints at an intriguing story beyond this slice of life, and leaves the reader’s mind reaching for more. A wonderful story filled with suspense!
