Do you like science? Do you enjoy working with others, helping them feel better? Perhaps your life will lead you into a career in health sciences. There are so many amazing things you can do: you can be a doctor, a nurse, a pharmacist, an optometrist, a dentist, a veterinarian, with so many other amazing medical professional careers. A group of young girls who love science dream of being one of these medical professionals and they plan to work hard to achieve their dreams.
Orezime Uyeh’s picture book story, Girls for Medicine, is a special edition with a theme of diversity to encourage and empower young girls to dream big, to plan for a rewarding future in health sciences. The plot begins with a challenge from the science teacher (also a woman) to the girls in her class. She challenges them to go outside, lie on the grass, and dream big. Each girl dreams of a different possible medical professional career and the plot discusses each potential career and why each girl is the best choice for the given career. At the end of the book is an interesting selection of brief insights on the main characters from the book and their chosen career path. This section is titled ‘The Amazing Medical Squad.’ Then the author introduces herself and her own passion for health sciences, a career she is currently pursuing. She includes a fun fact sheet about herself and there’s more info about medical careers and the author at the Girls for Medicine website.
The illustrations are bright and colorful. The text is written in various fonts to add some highlighting features. The vocabulary is simple, including phonetics on some of the more difficult words, to help the young reader improve their reading skills. This is a great story to encourage young girls to consider a career in medicine. Although the author covers many different medical fields, there are many more to consider.
