Girls Can Be Anything is a children’s book written by Dr. Tamecca Rogers, the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Tulsa Technology Center, and London Love, a third-grader herself. The story takes place on Inauguration Day in America when Kamala Harris becomes the new Vice President. The book narrates the story of four girls coming from vastly different backgrounds. Anastasia is a dark-skinned girl, while Tamika has to use a wheelchair. Aanya and Amelia are of Indian and Jamaican origin, respectively. All of them are excited to see a female vice president, something they had never dreamed of. Moreover, they are overjoyed to have found out many similarities between their lives and Harris’s.
Despite its short length, Girls Can Be Anything is by far one of the most inspirational books I have read. Through her divergent characters, Dr. Rogers and London Love highlights that girls can grow up to do wonderful things, irrespective of their body color, origin, or disabilities. Kamala Harris, a strong and independent woman who has reached a prestigious and respected position, is the perfect idol for millions of little girls worldwide. As Anastasia, Aanya, Tamika, and Amelia list the similarities they have with the first-ever female vice president, it becomes a stark reminder that how society views us does not matter. If we can only perceive our true value and hold on to our dreams, we can reach anywhere with enough hard work and determination. The admirable artwork makes the characters vivid and realistic. I would implore parents to read this book to their children, especially girls, to remind them of the enormous potential they have.
