Ginger's Shoes by Steve Lindahl follows Susie Walsh's quest to fulfill her dying mother Nancy's wish to find Ginger's shoes. Susie is unaware of the significance of this task and never expects to uncover long-held family secrets. The last time she heard of these shoes was from her childhood best friend Kyle, whom she had not seen since she was thirteen years old. She reunites with Kyle and meets his girlfriend, Taylor, at her old summer home, which brings back nostalgic memories and unexpected emotions. Taylor's jealous behavior leads to suspicion but proves to be helpful in discovering Susie's mother's secrets. As she delves deeper into her mother's past, she realizes that her mother was a great woman but had done something that would forever change Susie's life.
Ginger's Shoes is a captivating story with an interesting plot and intriguing characters who experience complex emotions. It explores social issues such as sexuality, relationships, and motherhood. The story keeps you on your toes with its unexpected revelations from Nancy’s past and the unusual relationship dynamics between Susie, Kyle, and Taylor. Taylor, in particular, is an unpredictable character whose journey of self-discovery is ultimately shaped by Nancy's story. Steve Lindahl does an excellent job of building tension by giving different clues that perfectly add up at the end of the story. In addition to the mystery plot, there is also a slow-burn romance woven into the narrative, adding diversity and making it a thoroughly enjoyable read. Overall, this book is well-written and a must-read for all family drama and mystery fans.
