Giahem's Talons (The Incarn Saga) by Katharine E Wibell is a gripping fantasy with a strong appeal to young adult readers who enjoy epic fantasies. With strong undertones of myth and legend and a plot that features the proverbial struggle between light and darkness, good and evil, it features a young female protagonist with a mission that is very intimidating. When the story begins, eighteen-year-old Lluava is surprised to find herself alive. She is an indefatigable warrior who has won many battles. But now the Kingdom of Elysia is in the hands of Outlanders, the king has fallen, and she must run for her life. She knows she has brought this mess to the kingdom. But can she find the strength to right these wrongs?
The writing is just so gorgeous that it pulled me in. The descriptive nature of the prose had me enticed right from the first paragraph: "Darkness was their ally, like a vigilant brother always watching, always protecting. In the shadows, they lurked as silently as the ghosts they helped to create." The conflict is phenomenal and I loved how the protagonist evolves in it. The references to the pantheon of the gods, the divine fathering, are exciting elements that will appeal to fans of mythology. The story is packed with action and the characters are richly developed. Giahem's Talons (The Incarn Saga) is a beautiful novel, featuring an imaginative world that readers will want to navigate. It is as gripping as it is delightful; from the crisp prose to the ingenious plotting, from the vivid setting to the realistic characters, it reflects the skills of a master storyteller.
