Kathleen J. Shields introduces us to Jamie Kanis in Ghost Dogs: Seeing is Believing before he is even born. His father died in an automobile crash and his mother raises Jamie alone. From an early age, he sees dogs that are deceased and have become what Jamie calls “ghost dogs.” They are not frightening. They romp and tussle, having the time of their lives. They tumble like puppies, and chase squirrels and chipmunks. Their appearance is a bit transparent, but their eyes are solid. Jamie is the only child in his school who can see them. These deceased pets bring both problems and great joy to Jamie’s life.
Ghost Dogs is Jamie’s story of the early years of his life and how the ghosts help him and his mother navigate through trying times. It is filled with everyday activities improved by the assistance of these “ghost dogs.” Sports are easy for Jamie because the ghosts instinctively know where a baseball will land, or which way to run with a football. The ghosts help find a friend’s father who is lost in the woods after a vehicle accident. Ghost Dogs includes strong emotions that will have young readers of Kathleen J. Shields’ book turning the pages with anticipation and joy as Jamie learns lessons of love and friendship. His instructors are a troupe of Maltese, Labradors, Bulldogs, and a complete collection of all breeds. Our hero learns real-life lessons in this excellent, heart-filled sentimental work that every child should experience to become a caring and empathetic adult.
