George Washington’s Secret Six: The Spy Ring That saved the American Revolution was written by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger. The audio version was narrated by Brian Kilmeade. Six brave and loyal patriots risked their life to make this a free nation. General George Washington knew he needed to know what the British were planning because without information victory would be impossible. Washington’s volunteer army of farmers and merchants were outnumbered by the well-trained British troops. Nathan Hale was the first to volunteer to enter New York and gather information. This brave man and his mission was doomed from the beginning. Washington realized one man alone could not complete the mission; it would take several working in tandem to gather the information and pass it along. The Secret Six were: Robert Townsend, Austin Roe, Caleb Brewster, Abraham Woodhull, James Rivington and an unknown lady known only as Agent 355. For almost 200 years the identity of these courageous patriots remained a mystery.
George Washington’s Secret Six is a fascinating look at history. Countless hours of research had to go into this project for the facts the authors used were kept well hidden. Authors Brian Kilmeade and Dan Yaeger breathe life into the history of the American Revolution. It is a given that they used poetic license when it came to conversations. The authors’ writing is easy to understand, clear and crisp. The characters were interesting and well developed. While I would have liked more information on Nathan Hale, I realize the information available was limited. Using Brian Kilmeade as the narrator at times reminded me of listening to a newscast. That isn’t necessarily a negative. I found his voice and inflections worked well with this text. I have already recommended this book to several people and think it would be appropriate for a classroom assignment. I hope the authors will make this into the first of a series of books on American history and little known facts.
