Gary the Garbage Can by Jim Bayer is a fun children's book about a garbage can named Gary. One day, Gary and his friend, Smitty the goat, are going frog-catching at the pond. Along the way, they pass a snake named Olive. Smitty wants to borrow the ball Olive is playing with, and Olive reluctant lets him have it. Gary and Smitty continue down the trail that leads to the pond. At the pond, they meet a turtle named Taco, who speaks Spanish. But then, Smitty starts carelessly playing with the ball, and suddenly it ends up in the pond next to a large purple rock. They start throwing stones at the ball, hoping it will float back to them. But then, the purple rock starts to move...
I really enjoyed reading Gary the Garbage Can by Jim Bayer. The book is very well written and descriptive. I liked that each character is unique, and has their own personality. The story is very creative, with a few funny parts and parts filled with suspense. The characters are all very likeable, because they are all very kind, such as when Olive lets Smitty borrow her ball. The book teaches the importance of sharing, as well as teaching the importance of celebrating your differences. The pictures by Anna Murfield are very well drawn and clearly depict each scene. The story is well developed and well thought out. I would definitely recommend this book to all young readers.
