As greedy King Anakgahsi looks upon his kingdom, and senses a breeze, he feels that something is afoot. Something not to his liking, not of his plan. But when an adviser assures the king that the influences of the breeze were null and void, his lack of control continues to leave him feeling unhinged. The king did not particularly like Sir Divonn and he really enjoyed the thrill of a good argument, but he was smart enough not to prolong the issue. On this same day, many miles away, lovely Rosalie learns that she is an adopted princess. The responsibility of this honor brought great excitement to her family. Rosalie would learn the proper behavior of a princess, securing her future in a much better setting than the one in which she currently lived. Just when Rosalie begins to get comfortable in her extravagant lifestyle, she realizes that her heart is torn between a desire for this “better” life and a life with the boy who stole her heart.
Garden of Deceit by Karen Chang is a delightful story for middle grade and young adult readers. Chang incorporates elements of a fairy tale with twenty-first century language and the decision–making challenges that face our youth. While Rosalie struggles to maintain her high standards, she is also tempted with the fruits of a more prosperous life. As a princess in training, she discovers an inner strength that allows her to sacrifice her own happiness for the better good of her people. I really liked this story.
