From the Lakehouse: A Mother's Odyssey of Loss and Love by Kristen Rademacher is the author’s life story as she remembers some of the hardest times of her life. This memoir takes the reader back to when Kristen rebuilds her life after a bad breakup. Moving to North Carolina is a better option, so she packs her bags and takes her cat Max with her to a new place. That is where she meets Jason and somehow she falls hard for him. She knows they are rushing things; she knows this will end badly and this is a bad decision, but she cannot stop her heart. Before she knows it, she is pregnant once again and she already loves her baby. What is Kristen going to do now? Losing the baby is out of the question, but can she remain in another loveless relationship?
Kristen Rademacher holds nothing back and pours her heart out to readers. Her words bleed on the pages and you can feel her confusion and loss. From the Lakehouse is phenomenal in its realness and the calmness with which it is told. It is a stark reminder of how our relationships shape us and change us. Maybe it is because it is written in the first-person narrative, but I found a connection with Kristen immediately. Her loss is painful and you can feel it in your heart. It takes great courage to share your pain with the world while also sharing your mistakes. It takes a lot of courage to accept your mistakes and failure, and Kristen has plenty of it. This powerful and realistic memoir is a testament to how resilient a woman can be when she wants to survive and mend her heart.
