From the Ashes: Ravenwood Mysteries Book 1 by Sabrina Flynn is a fantastic period mystery about a missing woman and a detective haunted by an unfortunate past. Isobel Kingston has disappeared, but even her kidnapping is a confusing mix of events. Upon returning to the home he was hoping to avoid, Atticus Riot is pressed into service by an old friend. As he works to sort out the secrets of Isobel’s disappearance, Isobel takes her fate into her own hands, determined to free herself from those who hold her and find out the truth behind the events unfolding around her.
I have to say, I loved this book. From the Ashes was a great read. Every character came alive with detail and quality craftsmanship. It is a story influenced by history, and written so well that it was easy to sink into this world. I particularly loved the character of Isobel, though Atticus and Tim are equally appealing. Isobel’s drive to be in control of her own fate creates an urgency that breaks from the usual damsel in distress theme. As well, Atticus’ journey through confronting his past and the loss of his mentor is an enticing story of facing loss. Both tales weave through each other and drive the plot forward at a pace that kept me asking questions and wanting to know more. From the Ashes is a great book well worth the read, especially if you love historical mysteries. Thanks for a purely enjoyable read.
