The stories, written in a conversational tone and with pictures, are a delight to readers who are made aware of the beauty of these parks. The book also throws light on how the National Park Service preserves natural and cultural resources and the values of the National Park System for the enjoyment, education, and inspiration of this and future generations.
From Bear Dens to the Oval Office is an engaging and interesting memoir. Sheridan Steele shares the beginning of his national park career and how in his 38 years of working with the National Park Service he gave special attention to land conservation, getting the youth engaged in nature, promoting a quality visitor experience in parks, and improving gateway community relations. There are many fascinating stories. Sheridan Steele also speaks about how fire is a threat in the west where it is dry, and how he dealt with one major fire known as the 'project fire' which required the mobilization of around 150 firefighters from around the west. This memoir is a good way for readers to learn about America's national parks and get familiar with them.
