Looking for adventure, romance, suspense and action? Deanna J. Compton's Freecurrent 1: The Legacy has it all. Jessica "Jeese" Gates seems like your average teenage girl, but has a family history that even she doesn't know about. When Jeese finds her grandmother's diary and learns about the family secret, things in her life start changing and it's not for the better. Jeese has to make decisions that could affect her life. Will her choices lead her to a better future or will she be left to suffer?
While reading this book, I found myself locked in a fantasy world where past events influenced future events. Deanna J. Compton did a good job of taking the reader on a journey from current events to past events, and even some future events, elaborating on the world that is Freecurrent. Her characters range from funny, slightly flirtatious to serious, mistrustful, and their faults make them all the more enjoyable.
As the first book in the series, there is a lot of backstory that leads the reader into the second book and provides an insight into what may happen. The character development is not overly obvious, but it is clear that Compton wants it to evolve over the series. The events in the book show that the characters are undergoing changes. Any books with dragons and magic have always captured my fancy. I am glad to have discovered this series as Compton does a great job. I look forward to her next book.
