In Fractured: A Memoir by Jenny Brooks, Jenny struggled with loneliness during her childhood and hungered to be embraced and connected to somebody. She was so much younger than her classmates and did not have friends. Jenny was only 11 years old when her grandmother died, and she had never seen her mother so broken by grief. Mr. Castin, her music teacher, told her to come to his classroom to talk about her grandma’s passing. He molested her, and she felt dirty for wanting to fill the void in her. Keeping this horrible secret to herself made her feel more estranged from everyone and the molestation changed the way she learned to survive in life. She believed men just wanted sex and women wanted love and romance.

Fractured: A Memoir by Jenny Brooks is very emotional and cut close to the bone. Her journey was a roller coaster of emotions, and I felt part of it. There is so much happening that there was no time to put the book down. I had to keep on reading. I enjoyed reading her story and it was extremely informative and interesting. The people mentioned were excellently developed, and I could relate to them. Jenny is my favorite; she is a very strong woman and says what she feels without hiding anything. She describes her shame after the molestation and her pain during her medical trauma. The memoir is well written, and Jenny did not shy away from describing her shortcomings and emotions. She even mentioned her low pain threshold and how people saw her as being weak because of this.

Fractured is the story of Jenny Brooks, where the author recounts the momentous events of her life that shaped her into becoming the person she is today. Plagued by grief at her grandmother's death, eleven-year-old Jenny sought the comfort of her loved ones, only to find herself being taken advantage of and sexually molested by her music teacher. As the years roll by, Jenny skips a few grades and graduates from high school at the tender age of sixteen. As an adult, she lands herself a high-profile job as a consultant at a bank and marries Richard, with whom she goes on to have two boys, David and Jeff. Throughout this time, Jenny had to make quite a few trips to the hospital, beginning with her father's illness to her own multiple orthopedic surgeries. But Jenny continued to land on her feet.

A tale of resilience and facing life's struggles head-on one at a time, Fractured is an inspiring read you don't want to miss out on. Author Jenny Brooks draws an unflinching portrait of her life, revealing every moment that had an impact on her present and future. The retelling of her abuse by a person she trusted was especially hard to read but necessary nevertheless. Brooks also shares her health issues in detail and recounts how her tendency to question everything came through when multiple doctors and surgeries failed to heal her. The prose is crisp and concise, making the narrative a breeze to go through. This is the story of a tenacious woman that I highly recommend.

Jenny Brooks tells the story of her life in Fractured: A Memoir, not only filled with a plethora of unexpected injuries and problems but with bravery and determination. The story follows young Jenny Brooks as she deals with her grandmother’s death and its unfortunate repercussions. Written in chronological order, Jenny goes to college and eventually marries Richard, a charming and caring husband who follows and supports her through anything. Her adult life is suddenly surrounded by doctors and hospitals; by staying true to her instincts she managed to find out that she has to undergo major surgery on both of her legs. The following months of her life are filled with countless calls to 911, hospital appointments, and physical therapy. Despite her aversion to the hospital, she has managed to stay strong and do what is best for her health. Thankfully, her sons' lives continue to improve whilst she is undergoing such medical catastrophes. Her determination to get better is remarkable.

Fractured: A Memoir started with a startling bang which, in all honesty, almost made me cry. Jenny Brooks’ story is one to admire, and her relentless desire to get better and be the best version of herself as a middle-aged woman. The author has portrayed herself in the character in such an incredible manner, it seemed so real. While reading, I found myself getting annoyed and distressed at all the things that were continuously happening to Jenny. From this memoir, I gained the determination to always take care of myself; one never knows what might happen. Jenny has demonstrated that willpower gives one the will to go on and do actual good. As I was getting close to the end, I kept expecting something worse to happen and I was relieved to learn that all is well. Reading this memoir really gives the reader the slap one needs to be thankful in life.
